Anthony Mc Watt

Dr. Anthony McWatt, PhD was the first person in the world to receive a PhD in Robert Pirsig’s Metaphysics of Quality (MOQ) and is the administrator for the official Robert Pirsig website and associated social media pages.

His PhD thesis, A Critical Analysis of Robert Pirsig’s Metaphysics of Quality (2004) provides a critical synopsis of the MOQ that furnishes an overview of the system and attempts to locate its philosophical heritage with respect to the traditional academic philosophy of the West and the traditional, more mystical philosophy of East Asia. His follow-up publication, The MOQ Textbook: An Introduction to Robert Pirsig’s Metaphysics of Quality (2005), written largely with the philosophy under-graduate in mind, takes a wider remit and tends to cover many metaphysical issues related to the MOQ not explored elsewhere.

Dr McWatt also has a strong interest in fine art, music, the social sciences, architecture and physics. His debut documentary film “On The Road with Robert Pirsig” was premiered in Liverpool & Minneapolis in 2009 and has been screened occasionally throughout the UK and the US since then. Currently based in Liverpool, his company MOQ Media publishes MOQ-related books and films and he is available for lectures and speaking engagements related to Robert Pirsig’s work and philosophy.

Anthony McWatt comes closer than anyone to being a dharma successor of my own work on the Metaphysics of Quality.

Robert Maynard Pirsig (September 6, 1928 – April 24, 2017) was an American writer and philosopher. He was the author of the philosophical novels Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values (1974) and Lila: An Inquiry into Morals (1991)

The better known, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, develops around Pirsig’s exploration into the nature of “Quality”. It is an exploration of the underlying metaphysics of Western culture. Pirsig finds in “Quality” a special significance and common ground between Western and Eastern world views.

In Lila: An Inquiry into Morals, he developed a value-based metaphysics, Metaphysics of Quality, that challenges our subject-object view of reality

This website is dedicated to his memory, in pursuit of expounding the MOQ as understood by its many adherents today.
